Doctor Who

Here is a digital painting of the 10th doctor, David Tennant. I've only made it this far in Doctor Who, on Netflix, so I'm sure there will be a new one once I get to the current doctor. If anyone wants to see the process getting to the final leave a comment and I'll upload from sketch to completion.

I really must apologize for the lack of posts. I have many projects in the works right now, and don't worry I have not forgotten about you or the blog. Looking for change? This piece is Obama getting his change from a piggy bank of taxpayer money. Agree with his policies or not, this country has a massive debt problem coupled with ridiculous budget deficits. Wonder where your money goes? Well hopefully this clues you in a little.

This is a great book I recently got. It is by artist Joe Bluhm an amazing caricature artist and illustrator. This book is full of sketches and quotes from other artists about sketching. WIP Obama... I mean Obama WIP

Block in for an Obama piece I'm working on. I'm an equal opportunity offender, so to anyone who thought that I'm only going to rip on Mitt Romeny you were incorrect.

Worse than stock illustration?

     I remember when I was in college at The Cleveland Institute of Art my teachers always preached about the negatives of stock illustration. Obviously they were right, stock illustration is a real problem in our field. You do tons of work for next to no money and you give away the rights to your art. Who wants to do that?
 
     Unfortunately there is yet another problem, a bigger problem, in our field and it's called crowdsourcing. The concept of croudsourcing makes sense, the problem comes with the implementation. Many designers and illustrators have undoubtedly seen sites like Elance.com, Freelancer.com, crowdspring.com and even Fiverr.com (probably my least favorite) What these sites are for has a great premise, post jobs and get creative people working on projects. The problem is they completely degrade our value as artists.

Corporations are people too!

This is a piece I recently did inspired by a Rush Limbaugh rant. Limbaugh was going off because of the new The Dark Knight Rises movie. He believes that the villain of the movie, Bane, is actually a liberal conspiracy to connect Mitt Romney and Bain Capital to the evil mastermind antagonist of the heroic Batman (Obama in Rush's argument). He went on to say all the brain dead liberals will go see this movie and be compelled to dislike Mitt Romney. His argument is beyond ridiculous for many obvious reasons, so I decided to do this piece and illustrate what he believes everyone who sees this movie will be brainwashed into believing. That is if they didn't believe it already.

Another Celebrity Caricature

Caricature study of Robert Downey Jr. I'm so glad this guy got off the drugs from Due Date to Iron Man and the Avengers and even the Sherlock Holmes series. I can't imagine different actors in those movies if he would have not gotten clean. A lot of train wrecks of actors out there just amazing he came back.

Robbie's Anniversary

A friend of mine asked me to do a drawing for his first wedding anniversary. Apparently the first anniversary you are supposed to give something made of paper. Naturally, he asked me to do a sketch of them from the wedding. I didn't like leaving it as just a pencil sketch so I went back over it with a black marker. I took that drawing and used live trace in Adobe Illustrator to vectorize it and even out the marker strokes. I took the final drawing and had it printed onto a marbled paper which looked really cool. They were both very happy with the end result.

Dark Shadows Illustration

Here is an illustration I did for a DeviantArt contest for the movie Dark Shadows. This piece didn't win, but I still like it and think it will be nice for my portfolio. It was digitally painted in photoshop using images they provided for the contest.

Digital caricature painting

Here is a caricature portrait I did of Ryan Reynolds. Just a digital painting study. I didn't really finish the clothing but it makes my eye focus on the face so I think I'll leave it like it is for now. Let me know what you think!

The Ghost Hunters

This is an older sketch of the Ghost Hunters, Grant and Jason. I was messing around with colored pencils and thought the result wasn't bad. It's nice after all the coloring I've done in Photoshop to go back to paper with a pencil in hand.

The Dictator

The Dictator is coming out on DVD soon and figured it'd be fitting post a digital painting I did before the movie came to theaters. I painted this 1. for practice and 2. because they marketed this so heavily I saw it every 5 minutes.

It finally happened....
